When the Battle Flag of the 106th flies this weekend against Northern Illinois it will bear the jersey number of Coach Stan Hyman, who passed away last weekend after battling leukemia.
Game number one is always interesting because you are never really quite sure what you are going to see from your opponent. We did see quite a few aspects of SHSU’s offense that we had worked on during camp, but their option game did catch us off guard and took us awhile to get adjusted to. Nonetheless, it’s great to start the season with a victory!
MUST WIN ON 3rd DOWN
For us to be successful, we are going to have to win in 3rd down situations. We were able to limit SHSU to convert 6/14 3rd down situations. We will need to improve in that area, but it was great to see us stop drives in the second half when we needed to.
ATTACKING THE FOOTBALL
We really excelled in this area which has been an area of focus for us. We were able to force four fumbles and recover three of them. These came at key times when SHSU was driving the ball. We also had eight pass break ups in the secondary. Its just a matter of time until we can turn those into interceptions.
GOAL LINE STAND
I was glad to see us end the game like we did with the defense on the field. This was a great challenge to a defense that has been labeled inexperienced and unproven. With the game on the line it was up to the 106th.
FRIDAY NIGHT MEETING
I told the defense that for the 106th to have its own identity, we were going to have to something that had never been done. In the previous trips to Sam Houston State no Leatherneck football team has ever left Huntsville, TX victorious. There were losses in ‘87, ‘92, and ‘01. The 106th was going to have to change history and flip the script if they wanted to establish their own identity.
